MODDING – Major Update 7 – Steam Workshop Support, Historic Missions, Crossing Airstrips and more

Commanders, Major Update 7 “Modding” is out now! With this update, Ground of Aces officially gets Steam Workshop support and its first modding features. From now on, you can create your own content, share it with the community and download creations from other players directly through the Workshop.

A big thank-you to everyone who helped us test the modding features before the release. Your feedback made this update better.

New Features

Steam Workshop Support & Modding

  • Create, upload and download mods and maps through the Steam Workshop. You can mod:

    • Airplane skins: Give the airplanes your own look.

    • 3D objects: Change the appearance of buildable objects and map objects.

    • Ground textures: Give the ground of your airfield a new look.

    • Missions & quests: Create your own missions and quests, including new historic missions.

    • Game data: Tweak game values and stats through CSV files.

    • Maps: Upload your custom maps directly from the Map Editor.

You’ll find the modding guide and documentation, with tools to create your own mods, in the new Mod Menu.

New Mission Type - Historic Missions

Historic missions are a new type of special mission with a detailed description and an image. They’re marked differently on the map and in the mission presenter, so you can spot them easily.

  • They appear only once and don’t expire.

  • If you fail one, you can retry it immediately.

  • Failing them doesn’t count toward your weekly win rate.

15 New Historic Missions

  • The Lichfield Conversion campaign includes 5 missions for Lichfield

  • The Perranporth Vanguard campaign includes 6 missions for Perranporth

  • The German Blitz campaign includes 4 missions for all default maps (triggering after 1st November 1940)

New Tools for Creating Missions & Quests

  • In-game editors: Create and edit missions and quests directly in the game. If you prefer, you can still edit them externally with a text editor.

  • Chain missions: Link missions together, so a mission only appears after another one has been completed or failed.

  • Map-specific missions & quests: Use tags to decide which missions appear on which maps, and set the starting quest for each map.

  • Airplane livery quests: Create quests that unlock airplane skins.

You’ll find all the details in the modding documentation.

New Assets

A statue honoring our biggest Kickstarter backer Louis. It gives your crew confidence when they salute it and a passive boost for energy and mood. You can find it under Decoration.

These new assets were promised backer rewards for Kickstarter backers of certain reward tiers.

Other Improvements

Crossing airstrips

A much-requested airstrip feature is finally here: You can build airstrips that cross each other at a 90° angle.

(You can see here the Tier 1 Grass Airstrip mod in action.)

Manually enter production amounts in your workbenches

Another much-requested quality-of-life improvement that we can add now with this update.

More improvements:

  • Added old Hangar Gates back into the game.

  • Added airstrip-specific base accident chance to airstrip window.

  • Added universal wind directions & shaders for Flags and Windhose.

  • Added option to have different starting dates for custom maps.

  • Added mission difficulty indicators to the mission presenter.

  • Added ability to load a save without having its map installed.

  • Increased to Max. Victory Points to 24.

  • Increased max. zoom-out distance.

  • Reduced positive impact of bombers towards weekly ammo shipments to 25%, reducing ammo shipments later in the game.

  • Reduced default music volume to 75%.

  • Reduced amount of food that tomato plants give, while increasing the amount of grain & beans, to balance the different crops more.

  • Upgraded to Unity 6.

Thank you to everyone in our community who shared their feedback and wishes, like the one for crossing airstrips! A special thank-you goes to our most active Discord members, who also join our dev livestreams to discuss their requests and ideas directly with us. Shout-out to our livestream gang!

  • Fixed issues of crew members being stuck in planes on the parking spot.

Get Started with Modding with our GoA Modkit

Everything you need to know about the modding features and how to start, you can find here: https://blindflugstudios.github.io/goa-modkit

Never made a mod before? No programming experience? No problem! We built our GoA Modkit so it can guide you through your first steps.

It also includes guides for beginners and helps you mod faster and more easily with the help of an AI agent, using tools like Codex, OpenCode or Claude Code. The AI agent can answer your questions, guide you through the modding process, and help you get the mod files into the game.

Check Out Our Public 3D Asset Folder

You can now give many objects in Ground of Aces a new look. Repaint their textures, replace their 3D model and thumbnail with your own, and then bring them back into the game as your own mod. For airplanes, you can paint new liveries and add them as additional skins to the game.

To make 3D modding easier, we are sharing a public folder of 3D assets from Ground of Aces:

https://bit.ly/GOA3DAssets

The folder doesn't include all 3D assets yet, and we plan to expand the selection over time. Please note that several objects share one texture file, so changing a texture may affect more than one object.

Some notes about 3D modding:

  • You can replace existing objects with a new 3D model, but you cannot yet add entirely new objects to the game.

  • You can paint new airplane skins with the base map files for the airplanes that we share in the folder.

  • Changing or adding entirely new 3D models of airplanes isn't possible with this update. It's something we want to expand in the future.
